Abstract: | The transferral of ‘officer down’, a contemporary stencil graffiti on ceramic tiles by Dolk Lundgren, from ‘Aktienbrauerei Friedrichshöhe’, Berlin, gave rise to this thesis on street art preservation. Conservation ethics and material‐specific problems are discussed on the basis of several examples, including detailed descriptions and condition reports of ‘officer down’ and ‘sexdoll suit’ and using literature on conservation and restoration of contemporary art. The characteristic techniques of street art and graffiti and acrylic and nitro‐alkyd paints encountered during the analysis are central to the discussion. The thesis describes the development and implementation of a work plan for the detachment of the piece by the stacco technique and application to an aramid honeycomb board with an intervention layer. Suggestions are made for the in‐situ preservation of selected artworks of this type in ‘Friedrichshöhe’. |
