Overview:

Abstract: For centuries, Cotta sandstone is being used as material for sculpting. Its specific petrography and
the resulting properties lead to an excellent workability of the material, but they also cause typical
weathering characteristics.
The presented work addresses weathering‐ induced damages and their causes, along with the origin
and formation of Cotta sandstone. Information from different sources has been summarized to
present the current state of scientific research in this field. The focus was set on the petrography and
the immanent properties of the material. To clarify the origin of the damage observed in the stone,
the effect of clay content and its distribution within the structure of the stone is discussed, along with the influence of bioturbation. Furthermore, the conservation of objects made of Cotta sandstone is being considered.
