Overview:

Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to discuss the problems caused by the combination of various
materials for handcrafted objects using the relief of a small girl from the Royal Albert Memorial
Museum, Exeter, as an example.
Therefore, the used material, its characteristics and the manufacturing of the relief are described
and examined.
A list of the existing damage is given and is followed by the discussion of possible reasons for this
deterioration taking the material combination into account.
After this comprehensive examination a possible concept for the conservation treatment is
suggested, including cleaning, consolidating and stabilizing, as well as re‐adhering and a possible
gap‐filling. Important factors for these decisions are the preservation of the authenticity of the
relief and the material combination.
