Abstract: | Due to previous measures, especially during the 20th Century, the surface completion was revised. This substantially changed the original look of the cabinet in terms of colour and surface texture, which applies not only to the ebony‐veneered body but also to the embossed silver appliqués and cast silver figures. Extensive investigations of the corpus surface and an analysis by means of gas chromatography, identified a 16th Century surface layer. After carefully considering the object, a conception for the conservation and restoration of the two material groups was developed. This concept was based on the previous analysis and was exemplarily implemented. The primary goal was to approximate the cabinet’s visual appearance, under consideration of the historical surface, to its original condition. To accomplish this objective a separation of the different layers and measures on the metal were taken. |
