Abstract: | In autumn 2007 in the attic of the church of Heilig‐Geist in Passau, Bavaria an exciting discovery was made: Three stained glass windows, designed and executed around 1864 by the Scherer brothers of Munich. The panels where removed from the choir of the church after 1945. In the east window the Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin and in the neighbouring windows the 12 apostles where depicted. Probably due to the inappropriate storage the panels are in a severely damaged condition. A large amount of lost glass and breakages were assessed particularly on the east window. But besides the damage the well preserved exquisite painting and the beautiful lead work strike the eye. This bachelor thesis is concerned with the history, characteristics and the artistic context of the windows. With an example panel from the Coronation window the materials and techniques as well as the condition of the stained glass will be examined. Scheduled measures as advertised in the bill of quantities for the restoration work of the east window shall be verified with the „Guidelines for the Conservation and Restoration of Stained Glass“ of the Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi, Nuremberg 2004. In doing so, aspiration and feasibility of the guidelines will be discussed using the example of the Scherer windows. |
