Abstract: | Lack of hygiene is the main cause for exogenous damage to written cultural property in libraries. This could be avoided if high standards of hygiene were kept and regularly checked. This work examines existing German standards for conservation in archives and libraries regarding their specifications for hygiene and storage and looks at their practical application on rare collections at the University Library Frankfurt/Main as an example. The focus is on quality of air, interior climate, monitoring pests, cleaning areas of storage and acid- free protective packing. Removal of dust is vital as this forms the nutrient for microorganisms and moulds, which are a food source for insects |
