Abstract: | This thesis discusses a Dutch panel painting by the artist Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691), owned by the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere. The art historical research deals with Dutch landscape paintings of the 17th century, especially those of the artist. The visual appearance of the painting is characterized by a heavily yellowed varnish, which hides the extensive old retouchings. Because of blanching of the varnish and losses of the paint layer, both caused by water damage, a conservation and restoration treatment is developed. Scientific and instrumental analyses help to underpin the technological condition survey. With the results a concept for conservation and restoration is collaborated. The aim of the practical work is to reduce the varnish, preferably without taking off the retouchings and overpaintings from various older interventions. |
