Overview:

Abstract: The large-format canvas painting The Cross (1901) shows a scene from the Tyrolean Civil War of 1809 and is considered to be an early work by the Tyrolean artist Albin Egger-Lienz. It marks the turning point in his artistic oevre. A comprehensive material and condition survey is carried out in this work, which includes the development of a concept for the conservation and implementing appropriate measures. The focus lies on the strip-lining and streching possibilities of large-format canvas paintings. In addition, this thesis provides an overview of the painting technique of Albin Egger-Lienz. This is based on optical studies and substantiated by scientific analysis.
