| Abstract: | A considerable part of the wrought iron grave crosses in the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna is coated in a secondary, bitumen-containing linseed oil with inclusions of dirt particles. The coating covers the polychromy, the gilding as well as damaged areas. This thesis discusses the Tyrolian grave cross of the Neuner family, out of the affected group of objects. Firstly, the object’s history will be investigated from when it was initially set up in the graveyard and followed up to its later integration in the museum’s collection. Scientific analyses serve to examine the composition of the structure, to verify the assigned dates of the plates (1777) and to identify any modifications. A conservation concept will be developed, with the focus on finding a possible strategy for reducing the coating by testing selected methods. The conservation will be implemented based on a pattern axis. |
