Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The death shield of Hans Lorenz Kuefsteiner from 1547 is a polychrome wooden object that is
presented in the Renaissance-Castle Greillenstein. In addition to the art historical research,
processing of hatchments, the focus of this work lies in the technological, condition survey and
its evaluation based on scientific examination and instrumental diagnosis. During previous
interventions, the object was several times overworked. The shield is in a poor state of
preservation, which can be attributed to a previous attack of insects. The emphasis of the
practical work lies on the stabilization of the wooden substance reached by consolidating the
wood, underfilling the cavities and the gluing unstable elements. To find a suitable
consolidation and filling material test series will be evaluated. Further measures, such as
varnish reduction, filling and retouching will reach the aim to recover a pleasing appearance of
the death shield.
