Overview:
Abstract: On the basis of the consideration, to remove coatings from wooden surfaces by using refrigerants, their physical principles and properties of carbon dioxide and liquid nitrogen are described and restoratives examples of use are demonstrated. After pointing out the actual standard of knowledge, modifications in the colour and structure of paint layers after stressing by cryogenic temperatures are analysed by the use of natural science methods. Established restorative analyses are completed by up to now unknown resp. seldom used, physical test methods (ESPI, thermography).

The won results are interpreted on the basic physical models and finally discussed for using cryogenic agents for cleaning wooden art objects.
