Abstract: Tin pest is not corrosion but a damage based on the transformation of tin which is possible below +13,2 °C. The initial of the transformation seems to be the occurrence of contortions (deformations) in the metal’s microstructure. Those contortions are caused by cold working. X-ray defraction analyses on 13 potential tin pest cases provided evidence that tin pest can occur on organ pipes made of tin and lead alloys. The appearance of tin pest is in particular possible on organs situated in unheated churches in the colder regions of middle and nothern Europe. The documentation of the damage caused by tin pest on the organ of Maarja/Estonia and the discussion of possible conservation techniques leads to the recommendation of a heat treatment. This procedure seems to be the only reasonable means to achieve conservation by starting a recrystallisation process within the metal’s microstructure.
