Elisabeth Hösl: The coffins made of tin alloys in the Crypt of the Capuchin Friars in Vienna; history of restoration - climatic situation - future conservation back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The Crypt of the Capuchin Friars in Vienna (founded in 1617), burial place of 146 members of the imperial Habsburg family, is a cultural monument of Austria. For the first time a survey of the long history of restoration of about 50 coffins made of tin alloys is offered. An other main topic was to evaluate the climatic conditions, which improved considerably by the installation of an airconditioning system in 2003. The new environmental situation and the scientific analyses of samples taken from corrosion products and coatings give arguments against extensive restoration in future. The practical part of this diploma consists in an exemplary conservation of a child´s coffin.
