Abstract:	It is common practice at various conservation studios to cover natural resin varnishes with synthetic coating such as Paraloid®B72, in order to slow down their degradation rates. The natural resin varnishes dammar and mastic were coated with films of the synthetic resins Regalrez®R1094 and Laropal®A81. After natural and accelerated aging, the varnish samples were studied using Colour Spectroscopy, MALDI-MS and FTIR-Spectrometry. Differences in the yellowing and the degradation rates of the natural resins could be studied and concluded on the function and effect of the synthetic top coats on the degradation of the natural resin varnishes.
