Overview:

Abstract: The old sacristy in the minster of Herford in Northrine-Westphalia, Germany, shows a floral vault painting and a figurative mural. In the present thesis, the analysis of paint layers and condition, including damage patterns, is documented and evaluated. Supported by scientific examiniations, a polymer coating on the figurative mural painting was diagnosed to be the cause of damage. Additionally, the climate situation and the impact of salt have a negative effect on the paint layers. The damage patterns were mapped for their graphic documentation. The evaluation of the the cause of damage lead to the conservation concept for the figurative mural. This concept is based on sample series and a theoretic approach. Different types of material and their use were tested for their in-situ applicability. Conservatory measures and suggestions for preventive maintenance regarding the sacristy are based on these results.
