Zusammenfassung: The parchment manuscript belonging to the collapsed Historical Archive of the City of Cologne (“Schreinsbuch 167/2” from the late 18th century) will be described and historically categorized. Following the detailed presentation of the survey of the damages and explanation, restoration methods and subsequent preservation methods are discussed. Thanks to different series of experiments regarding water absorption and drying behavior of parchment on dummies, the damage on the “Schreinsbuch” and the resulting structural changes of the material can be understood. Detailed investigations are followed by practical experiments, such as dry cleaning of the parchment soiled with construction dust, separating interlocked parchment pages with subsequent smoothing and mending the parchment pages torn by construction waste. The experiment results then enable an accurate restoration. A concept for a complete restoration and conservation as well as an optimized storage of the “Schreinsbuch” can be provided by the results achieved.
