Zusammenfassung: The late gothic chapel bay of the „Rübenacher Haus" of Castle Eltz is considered one of the last still existing chapel bays with complete interior decoration, including wall paintings. In Terms of painting technique, those late gothic wall paintings, created in secco-technique on lime plaster using varying binding materials on a protein- and oil-basis, show interesting parallels to altarpieces. Due to moisture ingress and the layered, inhomogenous, and relatively dense painting technique the paintings deteriorated. The wallpaintings had been repainted in the 18th century and were worked over in 1992 with polyvinyl alcohol. Implications of these alterations are differences in pressure between the layers of paint and coating, accompanied by loss of certain paint layers. To conserve the remaining original parts of the painting, only non-destructive methods of analysis were applied. After assessing the painting techniques and the condition of the wallpaintings, and identifiing different causes of damage, a concept for the conservation and restoration has been developed.
