| Zusammenfassung: | Spring-backed notebooks are book bindings that are mainly found in archives. Due to their relatively complex production, they occupy a special position in book production. The spring spine allows an opening angle of more than 180° and facilitates writing on the pages in bound book form. The conservational care of this type of binding poses new challenges for archives, especially since the complex technique is little known and the enormous quantity of bindings is often neglected from a conservational point of view. This work focuses on the book-technical properties and the damage occurring to the spring-back technique. The basis for the investigations are the writing book inventories of the State Archives of the Canton of Bern. The objective is to address specific book-technical properties and to develop an initial tool for conservational and restorative interventions. The aim is to minimise possible uncertainties on the part of the conservator and to raise awareness of the spring-back technique as a valuable book binding. |
