Zusammenfassung: The following Bachelors thesis deals with the conservation of the unity of layers from the portrait of Misses Julie Heerlein Lindley, made in1852 from the Hamburg based artist Robert Schneider. The restoration and conservation department of the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte plans extensive measures on the textile support of the painting – the conservation concept, put together in this thesis, must precede these measures.
Support of the painting is a fine, textile tissue, fastened on a stretcher frame. The stretching is in a bad condition and the support is deformed. Along the deformation, the unity of painting layers is endangered as well. Research on the manufacturing and the history of the painting will be the bases of a conservation concept. Within this conservation concept a solution for the consolidation and cleaning of the painting layers should be found, keeping the measures on the support, that are following this thesis, in mind.
More accurately, this thesis is consisting of the identification of the object, followed by the history of the painting, artist and portrait person. The examination is split into the technological aspects of the object, meaning the production and object immanent changes that occurred with the ageing of the object, and the research of the current state, meaning changes that occurred from outer influences on the painting. These insights will then be compared with other paintings of the artist. Then the used literature is named and evaluated. Within the conservation concept, a method for the consolidation of the painting layers is discussed around the current state and
