Zusammenfassung: The work focuses on the cartoon No. 8 by Jan Vermeyen Cornelisz, which belongs to a series of cartoons that served as model for several series of tapestries. The cartoon series was created between 1546 and 1550, after The Campaign of Emperor Charles V. against Tunis, and is today permanently exhibited on the 2nd floor of the Art History Museum of Vienna (KHM). The cartoon No. 8 is called The Conquest and Plundery of Tunis and is made of black chalk and gouache on paper with large scale measures of 712 cm x 385 cm. The focus of the work is the reconstruction of the manufacturing process, the object biography and strategies for presenting the cartoon No. 8. On the basis of this the process of manufacturing was reconstructed and techniques and materials are described. By merging material-technological examinations and the object biography, an attempt is made to differentiate between traces of manufacturing, later phases of overpainting and different damage phenomena. Due to the unfavorable exhibition situation, the cartoon exhibits surface contamination, areas of loss in the paper carrier, cracks, wrinkles and historical repairs as well as light induced damage. Different approaches for the conservation, preservation and strategy of presentation are discussed. In addition, the reduction of surface dirt and the securing of protruding paper fragments were tested in an exemplary area.
