Zusammenfassung: The aim of the master thesis is to use finite-element-analysis on the example of an archaeological cauldron to find out the need for gap-fills of the object and to determine the necessary strength of the gap-fill materials. The Roman period cauldron was excavated in 1999 from Lower Saxony. The thin bronze walls, partially corroded through, have been cleaned in laboratory. For further conservation treatment the bronzewalls need reinforcement, what leads to the question about gap-fill methods. An attempt is made to confirm the hypothesis, that the cauldron can be instead of epoxy resins reinforced with weaker but reversible thermoplastic adhesives. Based on the conservation literature backing with fiberglass is overlaid. The strength of a fiberglass fabric along with HXTAL NYL-1, Paraloid™ B44 and Technovit® 5071 and its bond strength with corroded bronzesurface are tested in tensile test and tensile shear test. Technovit® 5071 is not suitable for the use with a fabric. In the bond test, regardless of the adhesive or overlap length, the weak point was always the corrosion layer. The tensile test determined regardless of the adhesive the strength of the fabrics whose modulus of elasticity was above 5000 N/mm2. The results of the finite element- nalysis show that the cauldron can also be strengthened with stronger thermoplastic adhesives from the modulus of elasticity 2000 N/mm2. Therefore, a glass fiber fabric together with thermoplastic Paraloid™ B44 will fill this requirement.
