Zusammenfassung: This thesis deals with the art-technological study, examination and analysis of the damages as well as a conception of conservation and restoration treatment of the canvas painting "Russian Pope" by the Nazarene painter Peter Rittig. In the course of its history, the painting has undergone numerous revi-sions, a lining, and several attempts to regenerate the coatings. In addition to damages regarding the original support, deformations and mold growth on the lining canvas, as well as damages in the prime layer and the painting layer, the varnish showed heavy blanching on the entire surface of the painting. Measures carried out during the thesis included a de-lining and reducing the glue-paste adhesive of the lining. But the main focus of the measures was the thinning of the blanched coatings on the resinous paint layer, which means that both layers are soluble in polar solvents. Thinning the varnish without damaging the paint layer was achieved by firstly slightly swelling the cracked coatings by va-porising ethanol on it and using Carbopol® gels in a second step.
The measures were able to restore the legibility of the painting, but also revealed severe damages of the paint layer caused by previous interventions.
