Zusammenfassung: In this study, the potental ofplasma-based methods for removing corrosion products from brass is
investgated. Extended focus is put on their potental applicaton in the restoraton ofhistorical
brass surfaces, such as those found in Boulle-style furniture. The mechanism ofplasma treatment
on corrosion products is described, as well as its use in restoraton so far. Several conventonal
methods of metal restoration are also described, along with their advantages and disadvantages.
The experimental part of this study involves the investigation of two plasma-based treatment
methods on artificially corroded brass samples. One method is a traditonal plasma treatment,
while the other examines the removal ofa corrosion layer using plasma-actvated water. Surface
property and material compositon analyses are conducted to evaluate the results. It was found
that both treatment methods were able to completely remove the oxide layer present in parts of
the brass surface. However, further research is needed before these methods can be used on
historical surfaces. The high temperatures generated during plasma treatment, as well as the
irregularity and colour changes ofthe resultng surface, currently prevent their applicaton on
Boulle-style furniture. On the other hand, treatment with plasma-actvated water proved to be
more efficient and produced a homogeneous appearance on the treated surface, although it stll
caused some colour changes.
