POLYKON – Quo vadis?

Im Rahmen eines 2009 begonnenen Forschungsprojektes an der Fachhochschule Potsdam zum Einsatz und zur Detektierung von polymeren Konservierungsmitteln an Kunst- und Kulturgütern wurde die Open-access Datenbank POLYKON entwickelt – http://polykon.fh-potsdam.de/ (Schorbach & Däßler 2013). Dabei erfolgte eine systematische Erfassung der in der Literatur erwähnten und praktisch eingesetzten Produkte. Neben allgemeinen Angaben zur Zusammensetzung und Nomenklatur werden u.a. Anwendungsbereiche, Eigenschaften, bisherige Untersuchungsergebnisse sowie Objekte, an denen diese Produkte eingesetzt worden, in mehr als 1300 Datensätzen in der Datenbank dargestellt. Neben der Dokumentation zum Einsatz polymerer Konservierungsmittel, die u.a. zum Kleben, Konsolidieren und Beschichten verwendet worden sind, ist das Ziel der Datenbank, die Kommunikation und Diskussion zur Thematik und zum Einsatz der Polymere zu fördern.
Nach ca. fünf Jahren Online-Erfahrung möchten wir mit diesem Beitrag die Struktur und Veränderungen der Datenbank sowie unsere Erfahrungen über das Nutzungsverhalten vorstellen und mit dem Auditorium der Tagung kritisch diskutieren.

Since 2009, a research project at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences / Department of Conservation and Restoration has been dealing with synthetic polymers used as conservation materials in e.g. gluing, consolidating or coating since the early 20th Century. Uncritical use of polymers often caused specific damages after some years, followed by controversies with regard to the application of these materials due to the fact that there is only limited knowledge about the products. Thus, the project is intended to investigate different products in the context of application, alteration and damages on monuments. During the project, available data of more than 1200 products mentioned in conservation references were collected and integrated in an online-database named POLYKON – http://polykon.fhpotsdam. de/. The database lists the composition, glossary, scope of application, properties of polymers, damages and locations where the polymers were applied. An important aim of the database is to reinforce communication about the use of polymers in conservation and restoration, to provide objective criteria in discussing conservation strategies and to facilitate the choice of appropriate conservation materials. After some 5 years of practical use of POLYKON, the authors will review their experiences with the database hopefully resulting in a fruitful debate and in fostering further research.
