Zusammenfassung: The wall painting retables of the side altars in St. Elisabeth’s church in Marburg are regarded as early and rare examples of gothic altar ensembles. The retables reveal two partly overlapping schemes of 13th and 15th century wall painting, which are painted in tempera technique on stone. Their present-day aesthetic appearance is additionally affected by 20th century over-painting. The aim of this diploma thesis is to study and document, for the first time, both the making of the wall paintings and their conservation history. Therefore, a thorough survey and investigation of the technique and materials of the wall paintings was undertaken: thus providing a basis from which to develop conservation proposals, and highlighting further possibilities for technical examination and art historical study.
