Zusammenfassung: | A glue-paste lining, dated to the beginning of the 20th century was the key aspect to some unusual damage which was discovered on a portrait of Francesco Petrarca from the 17th century by an unknown artist. The focus of this thesis is the evaluation of the planned treatments aimed at the stabilization of a de-lined and temporarily secured support which could no longer fulfill its original function. The loss of the original linen support amounted to approximately 30% due to infestation by biscuit beetles (Stegobium paniceum). The conservation and restoration involved filling in the larvae tunnels with a fibrous pulp as well as relining. For this purpose, a series of tests were performed, with consideration given to the different adhesives and also interleaves. The principle objective of conservation of this painting was to deliver an aesthetically pleasing appearance. |
