Zusammenfassung: The physical properties of amorphous polymeric films strongly depend on the solvent which has been used for solution. The degree of molecular expansion within solution and the later drying time are very influencive on the mechanical properties of the films. Four currently ac-cepted varnish materials (Paraloid® B72, MS2A, Laropal® A81, Regalrez® 1094) were solved in 4 to 7 solvents of different quality and dried for 8 months after casting on glass. They were ana-lyzed with DSC and TGA to distinguish the glass transition temperature, the relaxation and sol-vent retention. The results obviously show the influence of the solvent on the Tg and the relaxation maximum. The solvent retention is not only dependent on the evaporation rate of the used solvent but also on the affinity between the material and the solvent. Thus, many mechanical properties cannot be considered characteristic for a certain material, but depend on the shape of the sample, the solution quality, the speed of drying and the samples thermal history.
