Zusammenfassung: Synthetic dyes, which supplanted natural dyes towards the end of the nineteenth century, were increasingly used in the production of wood stains. This dissertation deals with the use of aniline dyes in wood stains and is subdivided into the main parts of history, technology/application and conservation/restoration. It analyses the historical context, available sources and the establishment of one of the first plants for the production of wood stains. The publications of Wilhelm Zimmermann and the wood stains developed by him played an important role in the development of stains from synthetic dyes. Questions relating to technology and terminology were addressed using the example of ARTI and original recipes. Decisive criterions of using were a simple process and a good sensitivity to ligth. Issues of conservation, restoration and analysis of wood stains are discussed using damage classification. The dissertation also contains an extensive collection of collateral materials (for example recipes and colour charts) and an exhaustive bibliography.
