Zusammenfassung: | This study was conducted to analyse the historical technique of oil/ white-lead compound on stone finishes in outdoor areas. Although this paint or varnish system was widely used during the Baroque era in Austria it fell into oblivion during the last century and can therefore only be found as remnants. Based upon the interpretation of historical sources it was attempted to reproduce this technique in a test series and examine the resultant information with regard to technical and aesthetic attributes. Special focus is placed on the subsurface pre-treatment process, coating composition and structure, and its aging behaviour. The practical implementation of the findings was the application of an oil/white-lead paint on two Baroque statues by Giovanni Giuliani owned by the Cistercian abbey Heiligenkreuz (Lower Austria) and which had originally been coated with this compound. |
