Zusammenfassung: ‘The Apostles’ cycle in St. Ursula in Cologne is a unique example of the “Rheinischer Zackenstil” from the
13th century. The fragmentary remained original paintings on stone tablets are mainly characterized by
overpainting and the subsequent removal of the later painting. This thesis has its focus on the assessment
of the original technique, added materials, as well as the condition and the technological composition of the
artwork. In this context, the used stone support and the tin-relief were considered significant for the current
state of research. New findings concerning the unclear provenance were discovered. Furthermore a concept
for conservation and restoration was developed. The focus in this concept was the discussion about the
removal of the applied synthetic resin varnish.
