Zusammenfassung: | In respect to its richly-figured programme, the gothic sacrament niche of St. Jakob’s Church in Rothenburg ob der Tauber represents an art historically important sacrament tabernacle. The lower half of the tabernacle is affected by deterioration and repairs made in the 19th century. Since the sacrament niche is directly integrated into the stone masonry of the eastern choir, it is assumed that the deterioration is moisture-related and due to a high salt content. This study provides a complete conservation concept for the sacrament niche. The concept discusses options for cleaning, removal of overpainting, fixing of the paint layer, and potential salt reduction methods. In addition, the stabilisation of friable areas of stone, as well as the presentation of the dado area are covered. |
