Zusammenfassung: Seals are relevant to prove the authenticity of the document they are attached to and today also a reliable source for medieval and modern history. Therefore they must be protected from any kind of damage. Since the 14th century protection systems like bags, cases and boxes made of different materials and in various shapes were being used.
In this thesis protection systems, which were examined in seventeen different archives of northern Germany and collect in a database established especially for this purpose, are introduced. Based on the examination protective and destructive characteristics of the systems towards the document and the seal are explained and previous handling with them described. The necessity to preserve not only protective but also destructive systems are mentioned as well as guidelines and recommendations for the conservation are given. In the end one possibility for the conservation of a system with destructive effects is provided based on a case study from the town archive in Hildesheim.
