Zusammenfassung: | Evidences of the technically highly developed Roman wall-paintings are preserved predominantly in the centres of Roman culture. The provincial wall-paintings on the territory of present Germany likewise constitute an important cultural and art-historical testimony. Many findings of the often only fragmentarily preserved wall-paintings give proof of a rich decoration of the palaces and villas on the territory of Roman provinces. The preserved Roman paintings have been described repeatedly, whereas the descriptions in Germany have concentrated on the iconographic and stylistic characteristics. The investigation of Roman technique in the provinces and the comparison with results from examples in Italy have been less intense so far. There are a few published investigations of significant Roman sites, but no comprehensive reflection and comparison of the investigation results of paintings from different regions and with different functions. This dissertation aims to close this gap. After a thorough investigation of the literature about wall-paintings in German provinces, the results found so far are compiled in order to state on this basis all yet unanswered questions. With the help of restorational findings on a selection of representative paintings, a comparable investigation method is elaborated. The identification and documentation of the works of art is ascertained through an exact analysis of the materials, production and arrangement techniques, as well as through the examination of the material changes through human-caused and natural influences. The mortar- and pigment-analyses are executed on all representative wall-paintings in order to obtain a basis for the evaluation of the historic techniques. Further, an evaluation of written sources and a comparison with in situ remains has been carried out. The paintings are compared with regard to different construction types and their specific functions; they can be classified as either villas, houses, bath- or grave-facilities. All paintings from Germany have been selected and investigated following a uniform pattern and are afterwards set in relation to paintings from Italy. The comparison of the Roman provincial wall-paintings with the paintings from the Italian motherland clarifies the state of development and reveals to what degree the technical skills had spread. Finally, the restoration history of the paintings in Germany and its linkage with preservation is displayed. By means of that, a sensitisation, which demonstrates the high cultural and art-historical value of the paintings and thereby aids to ensure the authentic protection of the remains, is achieved. |
