Zusammenfassung: In the present study, the production technology of the 19th century for art castings made of iron was revealed. For this matter, several cast art collection houses, archives and institutions were contacted in Berlin, Freiburg, Lauchhammer, Bendorf-Sayn, Wien and Gleiwitz. In this context, a certain method for moulding sand (Stilarsky) and the contemporary, metallurgical knowledge about the selection of iron ore, the nature and classification of pig iron as well as the determination of its quality to guarantee an analogue production of art and investment castings were discovered.
Furthermore, the limited use of phosphoric ore to achieve the fluid consistency required for the casting method as well as the development of crystallization procedures (E. Schott) to assess the quality and suitability of iron were proved. Material testings (XRF and SEM) on selected samples of art castings testify the chemical composition of the alloys used. From a metallographic perspective, limited phosphorus contents and a specific phase distribution of elements, according to the product category as well as the application of annealing on thin-walled iron jewellery, have been documented.
