Zusammenfassung: | The Elephant-chair was created in 1554 out of four bones of the first “Viennese elephant”. As a curiosity and a representative piece of furniture it remains an admired feature of the Cabinet of Curiosities at Kremsmünster Abbey. Of the various kinds of visible damage resulting from secondary interventions, climatic fluctuations and transportation the most serious are the multiple fractures of one bone. Within the scope of this diploma thesis, the bonding of bone is examined in a series of tests.. In order to ascertain a suitable adhesive, two specimen-groups are exposed to a defined cycle of relative humidity, and are subsequently tested for their bending tensile strength. Apart from the bonding of the fracture, measurements for the stabilisation of the assembly are also undertaken. Conservational standards for future presentation and the loans of the elephant-chair are developed. |
