Zusammenfassung: | As the focus of this diploma thesis a total of nine fragments of two different 14th-century Italian silk fabrics were examined from the aspect of conservation science. A study of Medieval silk weaving and liturgical vestments placed the objects within their historic/cultural context. Furthermore, the significance of the fragments in a museum context was considered. Comprehensive technological examination and condition assessment of the two lampasweave pieces indicated the probable original uses of the fabrics. Research into the techniques for producing the metallic threads, especially the gilt membrane threads used in the weaving; attempts at reconstruction as well as test series for appropriate cleaning methods will be undertaken. The conservation and the construction of individual support boards will enable optimal preparations for future display or storage of the fragments. |
