Zusammenfassung: Within this diploma thesis a documentation structure for digital art was developed as a tool for preservation.
A digital artwork, based on a computer generated animation and made by the Austrian artist Helmut Mark was examined. To complete the documentation process in its entirety an artist interview was performed. Through this specific case study a method of documentation has been developed and consequently discussed within the current state of research and argued with other case studies.
Established strategies in digital preservation (emulation, migration, encapsulation) have been evaluated through a theoretical and experimental approach to illustrate the different existing layers of an installed digital artwork. Consequently according to the disclosed levels and threats of loss, strategies to intervene are suggested, facing different requirements, like the preservation of authenticity, integrity and materiality for a long term period. The output is a concept proposing several strategies, which can be modified according to the different context of collection.
