Zusammenfassung: | This diploma thesis deals with alkyd-resins used as a binder in paint. Their history, technology, properties and degradation are investigated and safety issues including disposal are introduced. The significance of alkyd-resins for artists’ purposes is derived from their primary use in industrial and household products and changes in the artistry of the 20th century. Aging process, due to chemical changes in structure, illustrate the upcoming and present conservation-challenges. Possibilities for analytic identification, storage and preventive and active conservation of alkyd-resin artworks are explored. The conservation of the alkyd-resin paintings #440 and #475 of David Reed is documented. |
