Zusammenfassung: | Subject of this Master‐Thesis is the envisaged conservation and restoration of the Kopf von Lorsch (Head of Lorsch). The object is part of a conglomerate of glass fragments of the so‐called Lorscher Glasfund. The archaeologist Friedrich Behn discovered them in the middle of the 1930s at Emperor Charlemagne´s former monastery in Lorsch. 115 fragments of it are preserved and are now being stored at the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt (Hessian State Museum Darmstadt). Today´s appearance is defined by the latest, comprehensive conservation and restoration by the glass conservator Gottfried Frenzel in 1965‐71. He reordered the finds and united 42 fragments to the so‐called Kopf von Lorsch. The other glass fragments of the Lorscher Glasfund, numbered 44‐116, are also being considered here. Together with the head, they were allocated at the time to a monumental stained glass window, presenting a single figure. They belong to the worldwide oldest preserved stained glass windows with figurative depictions of the 9th through to the 11th century. The Lorscher Glasfund is, due to the early dating, of outstanding significance both on national and international level. The uniqueness and significance for the science of art and the history of glass painting as well as the state of the preservation gave reason for the conservation and restoration of the head. A major purpose of this thesis is to establish the requirements for the creation of a presentable condition, so that the Kopf von Lorsch can soon be shown to the public once again. Its condition and extant form the basis for this. Another aim of the paper is to ascertain how to deal with Frenzel’s restorations. During the course of preparing this thesis, it turned out that Gottfried Frenzel created a state of preservation, which does not allow for an intervention with today´s technological means. For the time being, the condition of the Kopf von Lorsch therefore is to be accepted and the head can thus only be presented in its current state. A display of the head in a permanent exhibition of the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt is nevertheless still possible. Based on its uniqueness and significance for the science of art and the history of glass painting, such an approach appears commendable. Preventive treatments and different concepts for a joined presentation of the Kopf von Lorsch and the fragments 44‐116 are thus provided. |
