Zusammenfassung: Since 1921, 30 paintings from the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien (KHM – “History
of Art Museum, Vienna”), are on permanent loan to the Oberösterreichisches Landesmuseum Linz
(“Upper Austrian State Museum, Linz”). Due to the construction work and the remodelling of the
galleries in Linz, eight of these paintings have been returned to Vienna, because their condition was
considered endangered. They are presently in the Conservation Department of the Kunsthistorisches
Museum.
One painting has been selected for investigation and treatment; Christoph Amberger, portrait of
“Duke Louis X of Bavaria” (1540). The results of a technical and scientific investigation of the panel
structure, previous restoration campaigns and painting technique are decribed. Conservation and
restoration are documented, whereby priority is given to discussion and realisation of the removal of
the cradle.
Finally, a comparison of the panel with four other portraits of the same type, some of which are also
ascribed to Amberger, permits a further theoretical examination of the painting. The focus here is on
a comparison with a painting from the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe (“State Art Gallery,
Karlsruhe”).
