Zusammenfassung: The epitaph of Magdalena Fensterer, dated 1597, is part of the fittings of St. Lorenz Parish Church in
Erfurt and was originally attached to the facade of the church. The epitaph with its detailed figurative
scene is made of sandstone and is attributed to the sculptor Hans Friedemann the Elder.
Prior to the dissertation, a preliminary investigation to identify the layers, situated on the surface of
the stone, was carried out. These layers have shown to be of linseed oil, consisting of fragments of
sulphuric lime layers, various built up of crusts and compacted dust. Original polychrome or
monochrome paintings could not be proved. Environmental conditions in connection with the
formation of crust and dust layers have resulted in the local development of deformed surface flakes.
This has impaired the aesthetics: deformed flakes, thickness of layers and discolouring of stone
surfaces and painting respectively due to linseed oil impregnation.
Based on the results of the investigation into the object’s condition, suitable conservation and
restoration methods were chosen. The implementation of these measures was subject to a process,
during which decisions regarding the degree of cleaning and plastic mortar repair necessary were
gradually made. The main focus of this paper represents the practical discussion regarding the
methodical question about removal of damaged original material.
