Zusammenfassung: The present paper deals with the extensive investigation of an Egyptian child mummy and reflections
about its conservation and restoration. The object is dated in the Hellenistic or Roman Period. So the
materials used are specified and observed in connection with the determined age to support the
dating. Besides the documentation of the materials, the composition is examined under
technological, artistic and cultural aspects. Furthermore a digital reconstruction of the fragmentarily
preserved paint is made. An undocumented conservation of the object could also be revealed. The
fragile condition of the child mummy is recorded and the potential causes of the damages are
illustrated. Based on the gained information, considerations relating to appropriate methods are
undertaken. The treatments especially focus on the object´s exhibition outside from Europe and the
associated stress through the transportation. The methods not only include conservation and
restoration to ensure the material, such as cleaning, setting down certain textile areas and the
consolidation, but also concentrate on preventive recommendations. Thus an adequate construction
to support the mummy is essential to guarantee its continuing preservation.
