Zusammenfassung: Two wings of a medieval altar, painted on both sides and attributed to the Westphalian artist
"Master of the bearded male Heads", show through their high quality in execution the mastery of a
little known artist and his workshop. Both late‐medieval panels are stored in the "Stadtmuseum
Münster", the city museum of Münster.
In preparation of this thesis, the altar wings had been thoroughly examined with regards to their
technique, their condition and the causes for damage. This information served to draw up a
concept for the conservation treatment.
The outer and inner sides of the wings show a different condition: the outer side of both panels
had been severely damaged through an extensive joint repair. Parts of the original painting and
timber substrate had been removed. The outer sides of the wings are thus preserved only in a
fragmentary condition. By contrast, the paintings on the inner sides of the wings show a good
state of preservation.
