Zusammenfassung: The two gothic tondi, which are subject of this dissertation, form part of the interior furnishing
program for the ‘Great Hall’ of the old ‘Erfurt Town Hall’, which was demolished in 1830. There are
various thematic groups which form part of this ensemble: the portraits with the caption form
‘Freidanks‐Bescheidenheit’, the allegories of the months of the year, the tondos with relief carving,
as well as the religious interpretations of the evangelist symbols (iconography) and prophets. The
tondi are made out of spruce wood, are painted in tempera and have an average diameter of nearly
one meter (ca. 39, 4 in.). They all are partly fitted with silver and/or gold leaf. A central focus
comprises the comparative investigation of the complete stock of tondi. In the order of this project the tondi with the symbol of the evangelist Lukas were investigated. In case of the sculptural tondo with the carved Erfurt Wheel, the author was able to draw on the results of her second practical
semester. Both tondi were conserved and restored with the aim of a future presentation as part of
the permanent exhibition of the Middle Ages in the Angermuseum Erfurt. In addition special
attention was paid to the ‘ensemble effect’ of the tondi on exhibition
