Zusammenfassung: This diploma thesis describes the creation of a concept of measures for the restoration and
preventive conservation of medieval stained glass. The collection consists of 73 grisaille panels of
stained glass from the former Cistercian‐Abbey "Sankt Marien zur Pforte".
An introductory chapter is dealing with the monastic order of Cistercians and a survey of Cistercian
glass in Europe.
The examination of the panels had revealed that the stained glass suffers from microbial growth,
exterior corrosion crusts, several glass breakages and layers of dust on the inside. Furthermore, it
turned out that the storage of the panels is only of provisional nature and unsuitable for its
purpose.
A comprehensive appraisal of the collection and a documentation of the panels and their condition
have been carried out. The mechanism of damage and its direct causes has been identified and
explained.
As a result, the most important measures have been identified as the edge bonding the fractures,
the cleaning and disinfection of the glass surface as well as the fitting of bespoke frames in
preparation for the installation in situ. The introduction of an isothermal glazing system has been recommended and proposals for its execution have been made.
