Zusammenfassung: The Bachelor thesis contains a conservation concept for a Wall painting in the Church of St. Peter and
Paul in Weimar. It shows a scenery of the life of Saint Ursula.
The church is one of the oldest buildings in the city.
The church was nearly destroyed after some town fires. But in 1498 to 1500 it was rebuilt.
Meanwhile the wall painting was created on the tower wall in the western part of the church.
It is a late gothic lime painting. It was probably painted over and soon forgotten. Through alterations
and fixtures inside the church, like galleries or pews, the wall painting was extremely damaged,
because no one knows about its existence anymore.
It was first found in 1974 through renovations und uncovered. The condition is extremely
fragmentary. Only the field surrounding the image of Saint Ursula remained. The painting shows the
martyr group at their arrival in Cologne by ship. They were shot by a shower of arrows by offenders.
Besides Saint Ursula the member of the martyr group includes two bishops, eight virgins, a cardinal
and a pope. Broached elements in the upper range lend us to assume that remainders are covered by
the construction of the organ gallery. Probes could not find remains. A restoration followed after the
uncovering. The wall painting was fixed by three Paraloid B 72‐films and blemishes were caulked and
retouched. Since then no new Interventions in regards to the wall painting were made.
The Restoration of the painting has since then been suspended by some climatic variations. Some
damages result for example the painting lost the bond to the underground, the mortar got hollow
areas and a white coat of cast rest accrued on the surface of the painting.
Referring to the latest restoration in the seventies a conservation concept based on existence and
condition and damages and their cause was acquired. It includes some varieties and possibilities for
further dealing with the conservation and restoration of the wall painting`s readability.
