Zusammenfassung: The relief depicting a Roman soldier on a horse was part of the facade of the Palace of
Stotternheim, at the time the most splendid Renaissance buildings in Erfurt, from 1612 until its
destruction during a fire in 1660. Beside the relief "Roman soldier on the horse" another one has
been preserved, depicting Roman soldiers on foot, three richly ornamented archways, two
columns decorated with studding, along with two further relieves a "relief depicting weapons"
and "relief with an ascending lion". The relief "Roman soldier on the horse" dated 1620 was made
of sandstone from Seeberg and possibly originated from Erfurt. Within the framework of the
diploma thesis the history of use and resulting damages have been investigated. Furthermore, the
conservation and restoration of the relief and recommendations given for future presentation in
the ground floor of the Angermuseum in Erfurt was the aim of this piece of work.
