Zusammenfassung: This Master-Thesis deals with the conservation and restoration of a baroque writing-casket from the collection of the Stiftung Schloss Friedenstein in Gotha, Thuringia, with particular consideration of the variety of materials used for this object. In this context, technologies and approaches are being discussed and checked for their compatibility with the given object.
Furthermore, the individual requirements of the materials used for this object (wood, leather, silver, enamel, glass, paper, silk, steel) are being considered.
The machining-techniques of the leather upholstery found during further research regarding the history of the object are briefly discussed in this thesis.
The conservation and restoration of the object in the studio of the University of Applied Sciences in Erfurt is being illustrated in detail and questions and problems relating to this conservation are also being dealt with.
Particular attention has been paid to the question, how far the cleaning of an object influences its material existence, its condition or its historicity (“Historizität”) and which principles in terms of conservation ethics and techniques have to be made allowance for.
Furthermore, the conservation problems of such a composite object with reference to the required climate control and relating approaches of finding a compromise here are being discussed.
Finally, the options of a display in a museum are being presented.
