Zusammenfassung: The paper examines a wooden jousting targe of the mid-16th-century which served Duke August of Saxony as a shield for a special tournament game, the so-called “Anzogenrennen”. The investigated object and another wooden jousting targe are part of the armoury inventories of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. This other Grand Guard was exhibited for the opening of the Giants Hall Armoury in 2013. Yet there is little proven knowledge on further details of both objects. This paper explains the jousting targe’s complex construction and provides an art-historical classification. Appropriate non-destructive testing procedures are evaluated before the technology of micro-computer-tomography is explained in more detail. Based on these fundamentals, the Grand Guard´s multi-layer composition is explained with the help of selected and visually prepared photographs. This allows for a reconstruction of the most likely historical manufacturing process and conclusions on the materials used. Furthermore, the results provide information on historical repairs. The parts less suitable for tomographic detection have beforehand been visually analysed.
