Zusammenfassung: The memorial and education site Andreasstraße, where the former remand-centre of the Department for State Security (GDR) in Erfurt was located, is about to open its main exponent. Since the German reunification in 1989, the men’s arrest floor within the prison complex remained unused and will now be made available to act as a museum. In this context, a concept was developed to ensure the safeguard of its condition, which focuses on room climate, the impact of visitors on the building and concerns regarding contemporary materials. The engagement with the subject of political imprisonment in the GDR lead to the identification of significant signs of usage. At the same time, a plea evolved from this engagement for an extended recording of the holdings in these memorials and the treatment of the relatively new materials according to the highest standards in the preservation of historic monuments.
